Saturday, March 29, 2008: Over to Paragon

I walked over to Paragon this afternoon and met up with Bonhomme. I made all the usual stops on route including The Music Society. They have a "Giger" guitar (The fellow who came up with the original design for Alien) which is rather silly looking.

bkk09787.jpg

The Giger Guitar

Bonhomme was Mr. Hungry so we ate at Fuji and endured some sort of Thai Highschool-UnMusical complete with screaming crowds. There is some basic element of rock music that is lost in translation. We often speculate on exactly what that element is however as of yet we can't quite put our finger on it.

Afterwards we walked over to World Tard via the amazing walkway system of the future and had a Starbucks there.

The Starbucks is open and I had my first coffee there today. It was busy however I think its rather pricey for this area. I wonder how business might be after the novelty wears off. One thing for is for certain, they will have to clear the place of flies.

Thursday, March 27, 2008: Korg DS 10

ms10.jpg

The Korg MS 10

In 1978 I NEARLY had my parents persuaded to buy me a Korg MS-10 Synthesizer. However one of those "for you own good" types convinced them that it would be "better for me" (Better how? Please explain, fool!) if they got a piano and I played that. Although it is nice to know so many people were so worried for my well being in 1978 I did not want to play piano and after several tedious months of hammering out "In My Little Birch Canoe" and other hits from "The Song Book of Epic Jr. High Embarrassment" I simply gave up on the whole thing. All I wanted was a synthesizer so I could make beeping and blurping sounds.

Now 30 years later the Korg MS-10 or a reasonable digital emulation is now available for the Nintendo DS game system.

ds10.jpg

KORG DS-10

The KORG DS-10 is a music-creation software for the Nintendo DS that combines the superior interface of the Nintendo DS and the design concept of the famous MS-10 synthesizer.

screen_01.gif

The sound sources in the KORG DS-10 come from KORG - one of the world's top musical instrument producers - and no effort was spared in creating these ultra-high-quality sounds. The Nintendo DS's dual-screen touch panel is used to the fullest to provide a feel and operability that is unsurpassed, and combined with the sensory input mode at the touch-control screen, this unit can be appreciated by the complete novice as well as the seasoned professional.

screen_02.gif

In addition to the two analog synth simulators and drum module, a 6-track/16-step sequencer enables precise control and provides a wide range of musical possibilities. Several units can be connected and played together through a wireless link, and this and other features make the Nintendo DS and KORG DS-10 almost limitless in their application - they can take you places that no single synthesizer can.

screen_03.gif

Between the Mini Kaoss Pad, the Kaossilator and this I have to say I do like where Korg's technology is going.

Monday, March 24, 2008: Tuk Tuk

Yesterday was rather lazy. I spent much of the afternoon messing with gear. I recorded some bits running the Korg ER-1 through the Mini Kaoss pad, and later added some bits with the Korg EA-1 through it as well. I pulled out the Novation Bass Station and added further parts with that sans the Kaoss Pad. The Bass Station is such a great little piece of kit.

Last night Sandy's sister Pooh and her friend came by and we all went for Esan food. The place we normally go to was closed for some reason so we had to go further up the street. The place we ended up at had excellent food however it was spicer than I'd expected. I had spicy beef salad and I truly regretted it this morning. Truly. Truly. Regretted.

bkk09772.jpg

Its just about finished... What is it?

bkk09778.jpg

Who'd have guessed

I did Currahee despite my regrets and that was okay. Afterwards I walked over to the Swan for some breakfast. On the way I came across the most unfortunate Tuk Tuk and I was forced to take some photos of it. Now the driver was no where to be seen, and he might have objected at my laughing uncontrollably at his special hand knitted Tuk Tuk handle bar and gearshift dollies but if you can't take a joke you shouldn't be one.

Saturday, March 22, 2008: In Search of Beard Trimmer

My beard trimmer died a little over a week ago. It's the third cheapo brand one I've bought and the third one to die. So today's mission of need was to get a new one. I realize that looking like Charles Manson or Bin Laden is the beard style of choice for the youth of today but I am not a youth of today and I dislike the look of scruffy beards as much now as I did in the 1970s when I was a lad. So to avoid the growth of such a stylish and dawgy beard I need a functional trimmer. And not one that would die after nine months.

Sandy went over to Dang's for the day so I walked to Siam Discovery then on to Central World via the "skywalk" which is a walk way suspended beneath the Sky Train. It was quite nice out and with the correct music it was a lovely walk. I poked about at the music store first. They have the Korg R3 in stock now so I spend a little while trying that out. It is a nice keyboard but for some reason it just doesn't inspire the degree of gear lust I would expect. The sounds are good. I just don't feel they are all that much better than the Micro Korg or the XioSynth. I've read reviews insisting that it's "warmer" sounding than the Xio but I couldn't hear it. Perhaps if I had one and spent the necessary time programming my own sounds into it the results would be outstanding. But there's something about it that leaves me flat. I had the same thing happen with the Roland SH 201 when I tried it. A keyboard I expected to love... Just didn't do it. Perhaps its a matter of personal taste, I don't know. I loved the Xio the second I played it though. All that being said, if I had money to burn I'd buy both a SH 201 and a R3. After I bought a new Moog.

Oh yes. A beard trimmer. I nearly forgot.

Bonhomme texted me and wanted to meet up for Su-su-sushi at Fuji so I looked around the electronic/appliance zone unsuccessfully then headed back. They had nothing in the way of trimmers. They had lots of electric shavers and some odd "beard shapers" in case you want to make yourself look like a movie villian but nothing in the way of proper trimmers.

bkk09766.jpg

Walking back from Central World whatever its called now

I met up with Bonhomme for some food then we went to Starbucks over in the Paragon. I found a trimmer afterwards. I bought a "national brand name" type which hopefully will do the job as see on TV. We wandered about rather aimlessly eventually ending up in the Starbucks in Siam Discovery then on to MBK.

bkk09768.jpg

Walking to MBK

We saw something really funny at The Loft store in Siam Discovery later on after we'd milled about MBK. It was a box of Lego people style "Sex Pistols" band members. Only a hundred dollars. Talk about the great rock n roll swindle.

Friday, March 21, 2008: Constructions

A little running about. No running though. No Currahee at all actually. I may feel better but I know there is a difference between feeling better and being better. And that fever freak-out I had on Monday spooked me enough to be more careful.

Wednesday, March 19, 2008: Out Briefly

There wasn't any chance of me running or doing anything today after Monday's nasty bout of whatever it was. I was required to go out and about in the morning but once I was done what I had to do I got some breakfast at the Swan then headed back to the SOL for the rest of the day.

Tuesday, March 18, 2008: Aunt Edna

I got some bad news when I checked my email this morning. My Aunt Edna has passed away. I haven't seen her for quite a few years but I have good memories of her, especially from when we were moving from Halifax to Toronto in 1978. She was always very kind to me and our visits with her and Uncle Evert were always full of fun and lots of laughing.

Monday, March 17, 2008: The Rough Ride Home

I had a bit of a bad sleep. I hadn’t felt so hot yesterday and by this morning I was feeling less enthusiastic about anything. Including the idea of eating. As my feeling crap had proceeded last nights meal I don’t blame the Aussies cookie-sheet method of barbequing for my problems today. And problems they were.

I did eat a breakfast downstairs with Sandy, Lut, Mike and Minn. Afterwards at 7:30 am we loaded up the truck and headed over to the house to pick up the rest of the Khorat Rock City Massive. We got there and had a leisurely hang about with Jim and Poui until the KRCM decided it was time to go. I was at this point beginning to get a certain type of dry mouth that indicates impending doom.

bkk09684.jpg

A pig!

We loaded the van up with all the plants and bargains the KRCM had picked up then headed back on to the road. Now I’ve had the chills since Friday, this is something I still associate as a left over from the Big M, however as we headed along the chills turned to fever. I could feel myself heating up from the inside while feeling cold on the outside. I hoped that a long drive would help me out but then we made our first stop at the first temple on our route. Everyone hopped out of the van and I flowed rather slowing feeling both hot and cold and somewhat dizzy.

Batter up

I managed to wander around the temple grounds which were impressive and took some photos but I was not feeling very energetic. Eventually we made our way back to the van and headed out.

As we drove along down a nice straight stretch of highway it hit me. The internal warning system that says “you have two minutes before honk mechanism is engaged”. So I sat there thinking… Until there really wasn’t much more to think about. I told the rather surprised driver to pull over immediately and to the shock of all I jumped out went down to the grass beside the road and honked. I am glad to say none of last nights feast was involved. This mornings breakfast however… It wasn’t pretty. This of course had come with no warning to the KRCM. Sandy and Julian jumped out to my aid but what can you do? When it was all over I got back in the van and on we went.

At first I felt a lot better. Then the fever feeling started to build up. It would come in waves, build to extreme heat then sort of back away with the chills. Finally had the awful experience of what apparently is called a “ferbrile seizure” which is caused when your temperature increases too quickly. I could feel the fever building up rather intensely and I was unsure what was going to happen next. I wanted to tell the driver to pull over again but was what I can only describe as feeling punch drunk and couldn’t articulate the instructions. Then it felt as if I was lifting up out of my body and zap, I blacked out. Except that my body didn’t black out. I apparently tilted my head back and let out some sort of unearthly wailing while my arms went straight up and banged about on the roof the van. Sandy shook me until I came out of it. I only half remember a fragment of the “sound” I was making.

Afterwards I felt exhausted. The KRCM of course was not sure what was going on with me. We stopped again at a small roadside Thai diner that you’ll find along the motorways here; an open air affair, usually with just some sort of roof and wooden tables and chairs. The food at these is normally good but possibility beyond the tastes of the Western tourist type. I barely managed to walk to a table. Sandy put me in the back where there was more of a breeze as there was a little pond and some very lovely flowering trees. Honestly I thought it would be so nice just to walk over to those trees lay down and give up the ghost. That is how I felt. Sandy put some Sprite in me as well as some water. Then she insisted that I eat some rice and a bit of soup broth. I suspected I’d be honking this up later but I had it anyways.

We headed on the road again and made a stop at another Temple which was situated by a lake. I felt a bit more human and walked around a bit. There was a pond full of big cat fish that you could pay a few baht to feed for luck. It struck me that if I could have saved up my honk I could have given them a five star breakfast. However it was left for the ants to enjoy. I went and sat by one Buddha that was in a little garden for a while until everyone started heading back to the van and off we went.

bkk09716.jpg

Beside the lake

bkk09719.jpg

A place to rest

Yes off we went... Through the mountains.

Now I had dreaded this. I thought for sure that the curves would do me in and that it would be the worst possible place to pull over however I didn’t get sick at all. I was still fevering and unable to sleep so I just listened to music and tried not to think about anything else. We made a gas stop and I had some water. The KRCM kept trying to ply me with additional foods however I turned them all down.

After the gas up we headed on to another Temple which I really wish I had been well enough to enjoy. It featured a MASSIVE reclining Buddha and some very intricate workmanship. Sandy and the KRCM headed out and I remained safely in the van with the air con on. Oddly prior to this I had been thinking about how much I desired some ice cream; specifically a Dairy Queen chocolate dipped ice cream cone. Then shortly after parking Sandy returned to the van and handed me a vanilla ice cream covered in chocolate on a popsicle stick. That was truly heavenly. I gave her my camera to get some photos and when they were all done we headed back out on the road.

bkk09744.jpg

We went down through more hills and so forth and I was fine. Then as we sped along the straight and easy the alarm bells went off again. So I had the driver stop and out I hopped. They had unfortunately cleared the grass along this section by the method of burning so I was on hands and knees on gravel and ash on a steep incline letting it fly. Sandy got out and stayed with me until I was done.

bkk09745.jpg

After the last honk

bkk09746.jpg

On our way

This was the final honk of the day thankfully. We headed on eventually making a pit stop at a gas station that had a 7-11. I know the hippies of the world who are overly concerned about something or other are all aghast when they come here and see 7-11s but let me tell you how thankful I was to see it. Somewhere that sold mouthwash! Huzzah. (Now if only the 7-11s here had burritos) We did the stop and Mike checked up on me. When someone who’s had his leg amputated and almost died asks you how you are what do you say? Unless blood is squirting out your eye sockets all you can say is “fine”.

We headed on and the sun set. I was feeling better. I could tell as the ineptitude of the other drivers was beginning to annoy me. We did pass a recently overturned brand new pick up on a straight away that was baffling. How on earth do you roll a new truck in the daylight on a straight highway? The cops were already there and it was on the grass between the divided highway. I didn’t manage to get a photo of it as we passed it so quickly.

Driving at night

The sun set, I didn’t get any sicker and we drove on and on and on and on. There aren’t any signs to indicate how far you are to your destination so I could only imagine getting home at midnight. It was absolutely brutal. But I wasn’t feeling worse.

bkk09750.jpg

Are we there yet?

Julian got dropped off first then we finally got to Lut and Mikes and they got out of the van with their stuff. After a very brief stay we said our goodbyes to them as well as Sandy’s Parents who seemed rather concerned about my state. The van drove us back to the SOL were we unloaded. Ree, Dang, Pet and Pluk took a taxi back from here while Sandy and I unpacked.

I have never been so glad to get home.

Sunday, March 16, 2008: Barbeque

Sandy and I got up and had some of the breakfast buffet downstairs with Mike, Lut and Minn. Afterwards they went out to the van and went off sight seeing. I didn’t join them as I was feeling not 100 % and wanted to save up my batteries for this evening’s planned Australian barbeque.

bkk09667.jpg

A view on the way to breakfast

I didn’t do much at all, just messed with the XioSynth through the Mini Kaoss Pad and recorded a few things on the MRS8 which I had brought along with me. At around 5:00 pm Sandy called me to let me know they were on their way back and that she’d call when they’d reached the resort grounds so I could come down and then we’d go over to the barbeque.

They got back around 6:00 pm and I met them out front then off we went. The driver must have gotten better instructions as to how to get to the house because he had a new much simpler route to take. We were there a bit early and hung out in the back until the Aussies returned. The Khorat Rock City Massive put out a spread of Thai food and tried to prompt Mike and me to have some but we were saving ourselves for the barbeque.

bkk09673.jpg

Craig stokes the fire

The Aussies got back around 7:30 pm and the process of cooking the meat began. I had expected more flames. Actually I was under the impression that they rode the Angus Beef cows into an open pit of burning cars or something dramatic. This is not the case. They first get the fire / coals burning. Then they place a PLATE like a cookie sheet on top of the embers and put the meat on top of that. For me, personally the end results are what matter most and the results were absolutely outstanding. However there is just something about a grill and the drip drip flash burn of the juices onto the charcoals that I missed. But the Australians insist that this is the proper way to do it and who’s to argue; certainly not a Canadian.

bkk09682.jpg

The excellent results

The food was great. They also had a nice salad and some very tasty mashed potatoes to go with it all. With that and the company it was an excellent evening. Mike, Lut, Minn, Sandy and I headed back to the Hotel at around 10:00 pm. We head back tomorrow in the early.

Saturday, March 15, 2008: Wedding Day

bkk09516.jpg

Sunrise

We were up early and back to the house by 8:00 am. The traditional Thai wedding is an all day affair and begins with the Groom arriving at the house with a procession of friends and family bearing gifts and singing. Jim’s procession started down the road a bit and there were a few traditional Thai musicians playing and a great deal of shouting and singing. Once they arrived at the house Jim had to “ask” to come in and once everyone was upstairs in the main room and seated Jim had to coax Pouiy out of the room she was in. Then there were a few speeches and so forth and a short break while we awaited the arrival of the remaining Monks.

bkk09555.jpg

The Groom Arrives

bkk09581.jpg

Pluk talks to the Monk

Once the Monks were all in place the ceremony began. This involved some string being unwound and passed around between the Monks while they chatted. Poui and Jim sat opposite of the Monks. The head monk later splashed some water on them, then went around the rest of the room splashing water on everyone and then it was time for lunch. The Monks ate upstairs and we all headed down below for a big eat. There was a good group of people there including Jim’s family and friends from Australia. The Thais all tended to stay under the shade of the house while the Farang men, Australian and otherwise all sat out around this big picnic table in the back by the garden. The food of course was outstanding.

bkk09604.jpg

The Ceremony

Later there was a brief ceremony where everyone went back up stairs and lined up to pour a little water from a sea shell onto the Bride and Grooms while wishing them luck. After this we went back downstairs for more drinks and talk. I stayed with Mike and the other Farang men outside around the picnic table. There was a good mix of people and a lot a laughter. Jim's crew all great folks and as usual I find Australians pleasant company. There were a few Brits present so there was some good natured ribbing between them. Mike was of course in top form.

Friday, March 14, 2008: To Chang Rai

This weekend is the Thai Wedding of Sandy’s cousin Poui up in Chang Rai so we had to get up at 4:00 am this morning to be ready for when the van that had been rented for the trip came to pick us up. We went to bed earlier but 4:00 am seemed to come awfully quick. The Van came at 5:00 am exactly and we went down and put our stuff in the back. I wasn’t sure what to expect as far as van quality was concerned however it was a brand new vehicle with ample room for one and all. Sandy’s Mom and Dad, Dang, Pet, and Pluk were already on board so Sandy got in the back with them and I rode shotgun. Then it was off to pick up Lut, Mikey, Minn and Julian. Traffic was still light so getting over to their place wasn’t bad. We got there and loaded them on then began our journey.

bkk09412.jpg

bkk09411.jpg

On our way...

We managed to get clear of the city before getting caught in any traffic snarls. The driver put on a movie for everyone in the back and I listened to my iPod and drifted in and out of sleep. We drove for quite a while before making our first pit stop. After everyone had visited the rest rooms and the gas station convenience store we headed on into some rain which didn’t last long. We drove until we hit some town or other than had a large temple and shrine. We stopped there for about an hour. Sandy and her family made the rounds to the various Buddha’s while Mike and I just walked about outside the temples. Due to the loss of his one leg the process of taking off and putting back on shoes wasn’t something he was interested in doing. We eventually found a noodle shop and had a bite while we waiting for the Khorat Rock City Massive to join us. Once they’d eaten we headed back on the road.

Back on the road

Never having done this trip I really had no idea of how close or how far away we were from our destination. Nor did I have any clue as to what the lay of the land would be on the way. We eventually got into some foothills or I guess what is defined as mountains in these parts. The scenery in this area was amazing and reminded me a lot of either coming through the road up around Cultas Lake and the Columbia Valley, or heading out of the Fraser Valley up towards Hope. Driving was a little unnerving, not because of the proximity of the edge of the road to steep drops and cliffs but because of Thai’s habit of passing on curves and corners. We came across one accident which wasn’t too old. A cop had already arrived and put down warning cones so we slowed down then came around a corner to find a pick up on it’s side. There only seemed to be one occupant who didn’t appear to be injured but wasn’t looking too pleased sitting beside the truck.

Eventually as we neared our destination we stopped at another Temple and shrine. This one was set up on a hill and involved walking up a great many steps. Mike managed to pull this off which is amazing considering that the last time I saw him he was still using a walker to get around. Now he’s moving around with relatively little trouble at all.

Thursday, March 13, 2008: Running About

bkk09401.jpg

Building stuff

Up early early. Strange dreams and so forth waking me before the annoyo-tune alarm on my phone. I really should change the alarm ring tone but it is so annoying that I am absolutely certain to wake from it. When this phone dies (soon I fear) then I will have a new annoying alarm on a new phone. But until then...

Up and at it then out and about with this and that. No time for food until later on. Stopped by Chez Bonhomme and managed to grab some food stuffs then prior to a trip to Starbucks.

More running about followed by a haircut then back to the SOL for sunset and so forth.

Afterwards I headed off to 7-11 for supplies (sunflower seeds, milk, phone top-up), got some fresh orange juice then grabbed eggies and sausages. I had to go to the grocery store afterwards for more supplies then began my day.

Last night Sandy and I watched "Flyboys" which we got for the amazing price of 87 Baht. And worth that too. It wasn't a terrible movie. It just wasn't very good. It was so packed full of cliches that any sort of possible enthusiam you might have for the characters was lost. It was also full of ridiculous things that made the other efforts to make it "historically accurate" pointless. The CGI wasn't bad but it lacked the grace of "The Great Waldo Pepper" which was thankfully pre-CGI.

I'd love to see a movie about the First World War that didn't completey suck or wasn't some sort of tired cliched nonsense dismissing those who fought in it as either idealistic simpletons.

Up early, did the usual, then off to Currahee. I managed to injure my bad sholder last week so all I did this morning was run and some light stuff.

Afterwards it was off to eggies and sausages.

Sunday, March 9, 2008: To Siam Paragon

Sandy and I walked over to the Siam Center tonight and had dinner at Fuji. Afterwards we wandered around a bit then walked over to the Paragon. It is now "summer holidays" here so there was a great deal of kid related stuff going on at the Paragon including the marketing of some weird Japanese cartoon creatures that seem to be a cross between Hello Kitty and the Power Rangers (two of YOUR favorite things I am sure)

The stuff of nightmares

Cute?

Sandy and I headed up several floors partly I think to get away from the noise of the many things going on. There was a rather impressive toy train set up although it wasn't a proper "model railroad" but simply a toy train with many tracks.

If the train goes off the track...

On one floor we were confronted with the true identity of the frighting Japanese Cartoon creatures stalking the Mall.

So that's its name

"Japanese Cartoons are weird, man..."

Sandy wandered off to look at clothes or something and I briefly looked around the Sgt Freakazoid pavillion on my way to the guitar shop.

What is a bizarre Japanese cartoon without merchandising?

I poked about the music store until Sandy reappeared then we started back stopping at the DVD shop where the staff annoy you by following you around and suggesting movies for you to buy. Movies like "Hell Boy" or other award winning failed at the box office craptuculars such as "Lions for Lambs".

The Jodie Foster "Taxi Driver" collection?

Amazingly Sandy and I didn't go to Starbucks. Instead we walked back to the SOL stopping to buy some yellow watermellon on the way.

Saturday, March 8, 2008: Sleepless

Sleepless! Finally drifted off at around 5:00 am. Then was awake. Then fell asleep at 10:30 until 3:00 pm. Vague half dreamed memories of Sandy saying "good bye" as she went to her sisters.

No power for wandering. I battled with the computer which has been acting oddly with regards to external devices such as cameras and so forth. It either doesn't recognize them at all or wants to reload the drivers. When in doubt blame Microsoft.

Spent several hours clearing off room on the MRS8 and adding some guitar tracks via the G1 pedal. I haven't played guitar much in the last month. I ended up recording a new idea that has been kicking about since last year with the guitar. I don't know what will become of it.

Battled it out with the air pump contraption in the fish tank. A new one is needed.

Finished off, packed away the gear, then joined Fox Mulder for an episode of Season One which I've started rewatching. Sandy got back at around 10:30 pm with chicken but it was too late to eat really.

Wednesday, March 5, 2008: Show Room?

bkk09368.jpg

Is it a show room?

I'm still not sure what this will be. I suspect it will be an office/showroom for what ever condo is going up.

Sunday, March 2, 2008: Maria

If I had to pick one song that summed up late 1987 early 1988 ... This would be it.

"One hand lifted up to God, the other pointing to the earth..."

David Sylvian - Maria

Saturday, March 1, 2008: March Arrives

The weather is outstanding. But soon it will be moving to the almost unbearable hot hot. Then on the rain.

They should be getting the walls on soon...

"My Very Star" is finished. Or as finished as it can be right now. I have three other things in various states of completion all expected to have some sort of vocals. I will post them as they are done.

The Korg Mini Kaoss Pad is such a wonderful little piece of kit. The twisted power of the Sherman in the size not much bigger than my iPod. It makes for easy use and deployment.

Living in the Past
Ah, 1978!
